From #6684828 (bugs.opensolaris.org) In order for Indiana to be successful (by successful i mean lure linux users), the installation of codecs should not be impossible! Now, you must compile the gstreamer plugins (which is not exactly a trivial task). Gstplugins-(base|good|bad|ugly) needs to be available in the repository. Even if you chose to warn users about the legality of the codecs, they should still be able to install at their own will. This is a must! Solaris will not win on the desktop if you can't watch movies on it!
Glynn, I can't agree more. I've tried to build the gstreamer plugins. The specs are there in the SFE repository, but some of them don't work so well. If the codecs can be installed easily and just work, that'll be a big plus for attracting not only the Linux users.
I agree with this. However having all of gstplugin-* in the repository opens a small can of worms, since there's quite a lot of dependencies for the various plugins. It might be worthwhile considering creating packages for a select group of plugins. I.e. if you want MP4 audio support, there'd be a package for libfaad2 and one with the qtdemux and faad GST plugins (they're usually just *.so files, anyway), both installable via an alias (e.g. pkg install gstmp4audio). Additionally, there should be an overarching alias that just installs all available GST plugins, should this bug go forward.
