LiveCD/installer should provide partitioning tool (e.g. gparted)

Integrate parted into the installer experience, So that a user with a primary NTFS partition that is taking up the whole disk maybe resized. Just as many Linux distributions allow. Port already underway: http://code.google.com/p/solaris-parted/ Thanks,
Is your intention merely to provide the parted utility for use on the live CD, or are you desiring to do more than that?
(In reply to comment #1) > Is your intention merely to provide the parted utility for use on the live CD, > or are you desiring to do more than that? We should, at the very least, provide it on the LiveCD with gparted: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/ i.e. Phase0. Then Phase1, would be to include it as part of the installer like how Ubuntu 8.04 have done. However, Phase1 would require a little work from the Caiman team to integrate parted in such a way to provide the required functionality. At the very least for the moment, That is, Phase0. We should provide parted and gparted on the next LiveCD spin so that a Live Linux CD is not required to install OpenSolaris, which is kind of silly. Best Regards, Edward.
Agree with Edward comments. Though this bug synopsis is little different than my request but it contains the details of my request, ie. a good partition manager. If required i will file a separate bug. I strongly urge for a Ubuntu kinda gparted? embedded in the OpenSolaris 2009.04 Installer. Here is why. A Good OS installer *must* provide the following. 1. Disk Partition manager like Ubuntu which detects almost all kinds of OS and happily installs itself in the identified (splits the free size of existing OS into another partition) or given space. It never mess with other OS partition. 1.1 On the Other hand, OpenSolaris only identifies NTFS and nothing else!. worse it not even detects already installed OpenSolaris. So everytime it treats the hard disk as new. 2. Like Ubuntu, we should give an direct option of Install and LiveCD instead of always boot inside LiveCD and ask user to click the "Install" icon. 3. Detect and allows user to configure the network card (dhcp/static) Once #1,2,3 is done, rest will be breeze. Unless #1 is not fixed, user won't adopt/install OpenSolaris as fast as Ubuntu.
I didn't noticed this as a P4 bug and no target milestone. so moved to P3 (i wish it should be a P2. because disk partition and network management is THE key entry point for multi-OS install) and 2009.04. This is a request to make the OpenSolaris better, not an order. Because having DTrace,ZFS et.all is great, but why not give that much attention to disk partition and network management?
This bug asks for LiveCD/Installer providing convenient tool for dealing with partitions (shrinking existing, creating new, ...). Changing summary to reflect the scope of this bug. If there are other issues to be addressed, please file new bugs for them.
Reset target as development team is currently not intending to work on this. If someone picks it up to work on it, then they can set the target as appropriate.

For reference, parted & ntfsprogs were integrated into Nevada build 116 and will be available on OpenSolaris LiveCD - please see following bugs for more details: 6819750 Port GNU Parted to Solaris and include it on the OpenSolaris Live CD http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6819750 6819757 Port ntfsprogs to Solaris and include it on the OpenSolaris Live CD http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6819757
Mark Logan is working on adding gparted and ntfsprogs to the desktop. Once his side of the work is done, slim_cluster needs to be updated to include it on the liveCD.
GParted will be in snv_125. I just added it to Desktop. I did not know about this bug, so I opened two of my own: Add GParted, libparted, ntfsprogs to the slim_install cluster so that it will be on the Live CD: http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=11352 Add the GParted icon to the LiveCD desktop in order to make its availability obvious: http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=11353
As this has been added, closing.
