Description Jim Laurent 2007-11-01 14:18:31 UTC
VMware tools in Fusion 1.1RC1 beta attempts to install a script in

/usr/dt/config/Xsession.d

This directory does not exist on Indiana preview release and the installer
script fails. This prevents the tools from being installed correctly.

If you create the Xsession.d directory, the tools install apparentl correctly
but after restart the Xserver, I cannot login because the keyboard is mapped
incorrectly. For example, the "a" key is mapped to CapLock.
Comment 1 Alan Coopersmith 2007-11-01 15:57:01 UTC
Off by one mapping of keys in X usually indicates a failure of xkbcomp, which
should be recorded in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. (Getting the right keymappings
when xkbcomp fails on Solaris has already been fixed upstream in the next X.Org
release.)
Comment 2 weijun.wang 2007-11-02 10:26:28 UTC
In my case, the Q and A rows of keys are shifted one position to the right, the
Z rows 2 positions, TAB goes BackSpace, \ is RETURN, and I never find out which
one is SPACEBAR, and therefore I cannot run "init 5".
Comment 3 Jim Laurent 2007-11-02 12:57:58 UTC
Logged into Indiana. Keys mapped fine.
ssh into Indiana from the Mac terminal

mkdir /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d (required to allow vmware tools to complete)

Installed VMware tools
Log out of Gnome.
Keymap in gnome login is now messed up

Uninstalling the vmware tools using their uninstaller and restarting the Xorg
server returns the keymapping to normal. No reboot was required.

We'll use bug 68 to cover the keyboard issue while this can strictly cover the
pack of a supplied /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d directory. However, whether we
should fix this or not is still unclear since CDE won't be available.

Note /usr/dt/config/Xsession.d is a CDE login specific directory and contains
scripts that should get sourced when the user session is starting.

Note that this directory is not used by GDM. GDM instead uses the
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d directory.

Since GDM is the login program used in OpenSolaris, you probably should copy
the
script to the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d directory so that GDM will source the
file
on session startup. Weird behavior you are seeing may be caused by the script
not actually getting sourced.

VMWare probably needs to update their installer so it works better. On
OpenSolaris, they only need to install to /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d, but when
installing to Solaris (e.g. Nevada), they should install such startup scripts
to both file locations so it works with either CDE login or GDM.

This seems more like a VMware bug than an OpenSolaris bug.
